Children start off learning the basic 2D and 3D shapes and the correct terminology associated with shapes, and going on to recognise these shapes in everyday objects.
It is important to note that they must know the properties of the shapes at KS1 stage as well as know the differences between shapes be it 3D or 2D.
By the late stages of KS2 the child should be comfortable with recognsing shapes in different orientations and rotation etc…
They also need to know the properties of the shapes to a more advanced degree, this includes knowing the size of the angles in shapes, measuring the perimeter of shapes.
The concept of size is introduced in relation to rotation and translation of shapes on grids.
In the upper years mainly year 6 shapes and symmetry are linked as well as working out volume
One of the tougher aspects of shapes is finding missing lengths, and incoroprating a multitude of operations in a word problem question as this tests a lot of knowledge quickly
Shapes are an important aspect of maths as it links in with other topics such as area and perimeter, fractions, and volume to name a few.
