Here you will find an overview of what a child needs to know at a KS2 level, the KS2 arks over the age range of 7-11 (years 3,4,5, and 6). For algebra this is in years 5 and 6 only.
The child must be able to:
YEAR 5:
- Find the area of rectangles algebraically
- Find the perimeter of rectangles algebraically
- Use basic algebra to find the missing part of an equation
YEAR 6:
- Use algebra to find:
- Missing numbers
- Lengths
- Co-ordinates
- Angles
- Generalisations in number patterns
- Use algebra to find out the perimeter of shapes other than rectangles
- Use algebra to find out missing angles in shapes such as triangles
- Use algebra to mark co-ordinates on grids, and accurately use these co-ordinates to mark corners of shapes
- From the grids be able to translate the grid points given to other vertices represented in an algebraic format
