Decimals are often taught in close proximity to fractions and percentages as children need to know how to convert one to the other. They are introduced to the concept of decimals in Year 4 in relation to measurements in centimeters and milimeters. The next stage is establishing the relationship between fractions and decimals, and then percentages and decimals.
As the child gets older into years 5 and 6 the overlapping relationships between decimals and various concepts becomes more inherent and questions start to involve a mixture of procedures through word problem scenarios.
