Algebra is introduced to children in year 4 in a subtle way through the explanation of perimeter, but it is introduced in a big way in years 5 and 6 using algebra and algebraic language to solve problems. This involves using simple formulae and understanding basic expressions. Algebra also overlaps with geometry and space, as the children learn area, perimeter, and angles of different shapes (key being triangles) using algebra as formulae to work out questions. Children also need to know the use of algebra in graphical and diagrammatic representations.
So to show you clearly what your child needs to know about algebra is the following:
- Representing numbers as letters
- Algebraic equations
- Algebraic formulas in relation to shape and space (basic)
- Use algebra in measurements
- Algebraic addition
- Algebraic subtraction
- Algebraic multiplication
- Algebraic division
- Algebra involving BIDMAS
- Balancing equations
