The tuition centre started off when I tutored my own kids who subsequently got into KES and King Edwards Camphill. Upon their success, other family members asked me to teach their kids, so from there it spread. This allowed me to develop a system with which to build the skills a child needs from the ground up in order to be successful at the 11+, and to achieve this, a strict adherence to the main principles of the 11+ exam, which are speed and accuracy.
The best way for a child to learn this is repetition as this strengthens the synaptic pathways in the brain to recall the subsequent fact quicker. However this can oftentimes be boring for a child, so I add some variety in the lesson plans that not only cover the mental skills, but combine it with other activities such as drawing, or whatever the child likes, so it is fun. For example if the child liked stories an exercise would be to write and draw your own comic strip explaining the definition for a difficult maths term. I also use quizzes, games, and short speeches as effective tools for enhancing understanding, recall and accuracy.
These techniques helped the children learn and develop quickly, but exam techniques prior to the event helped amalgamate the knowledge better. The techniques used are adaptions of established aids and some are based upon research to do with stress relief that I found to be beneficial, such techniques involve breathing patterns and visualisation techniques to bolster confidence.
The atmosphere in the room is kept relaxed; this helps especially when doing timed exercises to encourage a cool mental attitude under pressure. To instil this at the start of the lessons we engage in a short 2 minute breathing exercise which keeps the child calm and focuses the attention.
